Pharmacy faves

I hope it’s sunny where you are because it’s gloomy and damp here in Scituate, MA! BUT — it’s a good day for hanging on the couch. Side note/speaking of couch time: if you haven’t checked out Playing House on USA (Season 1 is currently On Demand) – do yourself a favor and tee it up some time soon…it’s hilarious!

Today, I want to share a list of my favorite pharmacy buys. I’m all for splurging on a great product – but there are definitely products at your nearby pharmacy that work just as well as pricier department store brands. See below for my top faves!

  • Dry shampoo: this product is a life saver when I’m running low on time and my hair needs a refresher.
    • Which brand: Sauve Professionals dry shampoo (<$5) is perfection. It’s not heavy – freshens up my hair and dulls grease. Overall, a few sprays to my hair-line/part and a bit of fluffing with my hands – and boom, hair looks clean and fresh again

  • Lip gloss: I own roughly 100 lip glosses/sticks/balms…it’s an addiction. Moisturized lips with a pop of color can literally work miracles on any look.
    • Which brand: Almay color + care liquid lip balm. (<$5) It has a nice silky texture and comes in a bunch of great colors. I have 3 different colors including a more red/bold and then a total neutral almost nude. It’s a great gloss that moisturizes lips and has a handy wand applicator

  • Shampoo/Conditioner: I love trying new hair products – but I cringe at the cost of some of the salon brands. $25-$30 for a bottle of shampoo or conditioner?! I have a lot of hair — so that can be an expensive habit. So, there’s nothing like finding an affordable product at CVS or Walgreens…that makes my hair look, feel, and smell nice
    • Which brand: Another Sauve product! But specifically, Sauve Professional’s Moroccan Infusion Shine line. (<$5) Makes my hair super soft. Smells lovely. Reminds me of the Moroccan Oil salon brand that tends to break the bank. I’ve also used the Sauve Moroccan Infusion conditioner as a shaving balm – totally random, but honestly, it works quite nicely!

300

  • Microwaveable Wax: I need to have wax on hand – be it for an eyebrow emergency or to get rid of upper lip hair. Waxing your face is never comfortable. But I like a hard wax that is easy to microwave, apply, and cleanly rip off.

  • Deodorant: Can’t leave home without it. People may not see it – but if you don’t wear it…they’ll know. Ohhh they’ll know. I go for deodorants with no parabens or aluminum. There are great ones at Whole Foods – but when I can’t get there, I opt for this pharmacy brand

500

  • Eyeliner: I don’t own as many eye liners as lip products – but this category is a close second. I have sensitive eyes – so it has to be something that doesn’t cause watering or itchiness. I prefer crank up liners vs. pencils because I don’t love to sharpen.
    • Which brandPhysician Formula eyeliner trio in Warm Nude. (<$12) I love this product because it comes in a pack of 3. Darker colors good for night – lighter good for day. They can be layered. Great for sensitive eyes. Smudgeproof.

Happy Friday round up

Jeans are a ‘year round’ wardrobe staple. Dark, light, skinny, flare, boyfriend – so many styles. Thankfully, I can wear jeans to work which gives me more of a reason to own 5 too many pairs.

So, what’s the point here?

It’s to share a new (to me) pair of jeans that I picked up for the summer. They may appear to be nothin special – but these babies are SUPER soft and have a good stretch. They’re comfortable and flattering. They loosen up as you wear them but don’t bag out. I got mine a size down and they’re perfect. Not skin tight, and have a little give after I wear them for an hour or so. Once you wash em, they’ll tighten up again. Overall, great pair of pants that hit right at the ankle – perfect for sandals/flip flops/wedges. Also, wash isn’t too light (I find too light styles can make thighs look bigger – na thanks!).

Next up, in a totally unrelated category – this new hair brush I bought off Amazon. It claims to help dry hair faster – because there are lil pieces of absorbent towel-like fabric between the bristles. I was skeptical, but I bought it. It lives up to its promise. It definitely helps get excess water out of my hair. I wouldn’t say it drastically changes my drying time – but it helps. Anything that minimizes the time I spent sweatin to the oldies in front of the hair dryer is good to me. See pic below of this funky brush.

Last thing – I’ve been in the market for a new protien bar for awhile. I realize many of these so called bars are closer to a candy bar than anything healthy. BUT, for me – if I can find one with the right ingredients and less sugar, I’m game. Because…if i have something like this in my purse, I’ll reach for it when I’m hungry rather than an office cookie or candy. By grabbing one of these vs. total junk, I save myself from going into a sugar spiral. Which is a classic Beth move. That’s when I start with one cookie or piece of candy and then think F%CK IT (I’ve already eaten crap) and just go bananas eating more. So, needless to say, these convenient bars often keep me on track during a busy work day. I’d heard a lot about ‘QUEST’ bars. I was skeptical. But through the magic of Amazon, I was able to order a variety box and get within 2 days so I could finally test out the hype. Well…let me tell you…they’re tasty. I got the chocolate variety pack – I didn’t hate any of the flavors but I LOVE the OREO and the COOKIE DOUGH the best.

What I like other than the taste: low sugar, gluten free (although I’m not a gluten free eater)

Now here is where I sound like a hypocrit – I don’t trust nor know all the ingredients in these bars. They have ‘natural flavors’ which is a red flag for lab created aka not from nature ingredients. I like these bars as a quick snack to keep me on track but I don’t allow myself more than 1 per day. And if you have the time or if you’re good at planning ahead, opt for some raw nuts or fresh fruit over any so called protien bar.

Happy Friday!

The product you NEED in your skincare routine

Yes, I write about products all the time. So many options. BUT recently I started using something new…and you know what?

It’s not expensive, at all

It’s not exotic (aka hard to find)

You’ve heard of it before

It’s so simple, you prob won’t believe how great it is

I started using it after I ran out of a VERY overpriced serum. And I saw better results with this < $15 product than that $135 serum. It’s true – price ain’t nothing but a number.

Krystina, one of the (awesome!!) medical estheticians at Belle Sante Spa in Boston, MA –  suggested I try this product on my face instead of coconut oil. As a medical esthetician, Krystina, is a believer in science for skincare but she also promotes the benefits of natural skincare methods. This was one product she suggested as an easy and very beneficial add to any skincare routine.

Soooo, What is it?

  • JOJOBA OIL
  • The oil is derived from the Jojoba seed; although we call it an “oil” it’s actually a liquid wax
  • Want to know how to pronounce it properly? It’s one of life’s great mysteries – click here. I still can’t say it without laughing.
My favorite brand of Jojoba. Found at Whole Foods. This bottle will last forever

My favorite brand of Jojoba. Found at Whole Foods. This bottle will last forever

What type should you get?

  • 100% pure jojoba (organic and/or pesticide-free); it has a light golden color. Some say it has a light nutty smell. The kind I use doesn’t smell like much at all – which I like

Why is it great?

  • Anti-inflammatory properties, helps to heal irritated skin (think: eczema, psoriasis, sunburns)
  • Anti-aging agent due to moisturizing & hydrating properties (without being too greasy)
  • Smaller molecular structure than coconut oil so it sinks into skin better. This was a BIG selling point for me. Coconut oil is great for hair and body – but jojoba oil is better suited for your face/neck
  • Anti-bacterial properties – given this, it helps fight acne and blemishes. I have not had a pimple since using this
  • Helps regulate production of sebum – which can help counter excess oil production, clogged pores etc.

When do I use it?

  • Every damn day. Day and night.
  • After I wash and tone – I apply this before my Skinceuticals Vitamin B serum. Then, I let it sit and then apply serum & moisturizer on top
  • It sinks it well but if there is excess for some reason – I blot with a tissue

How much do I use?

  • 2-3 drops or so for my entire face and neck
This is a few drops. It's far less greasy than coconut oil and absorbs much better - which is great esp if you use under moisturizer and make up

This is a few drops. It’s far less greasy than coconut oil and absorbs much better – which is great esp if you use under moisturizer and make up

Probably the most riveting video you’ll ever watch. I want you to see the texture of it and how it sinks in. I used only a couple drops for my hand – but you can see how well it spreads and sinks in. Side note: be gentle rubbing into your skin especially your face (for some reason, my application looks a little rough in this vid). See below:

Where can you get it?

    • I got mine at Whole Foods. I started with a baby sizes bottle and then upgraded to the 8oz size (pictured above). I like this brand: The JoJoba Company
    • Random tip: when I want to travel with it – I squeeze some into a ziplock bag and double bag it.
    • You can also buy here:

Click here to buy —> Hobacare Jojoba Oil 8.45oz oil

I kid you not, this is an amazing product. For all the random creams and fancy serums I’ve tried – this is skincare simplicity at its best and it works.

There are other uses for jojoba that you can read about – including: eye make up remover, hair/moisturizing treatment, it is also a great carrier oil for massage!

Have you treated jojoba oil before?

Oil pulling…giving it a shot

I woke up this AM and decided it was time to try oil pulling. I had picked up a new jar of Coconut Oil yesterday at The Common Crow an awesome natural food store in Gloucester, MA. I wrote a post on some of the benefits of Coconut oil awhile back: read here. But at that time I had no idea what oil pulling was. Over the last year, I’ve heard about it more and more. I wonder, is it just another health fad? I don’t know! This is a great post by Wellness Mama that explains what oil pulling is and benefits of it.

What sparked me to finally try? In 2 different conversations this past week – I noticed some pearly whites…and had to say “your teeth look so white!” And I got the same response (2 different people, 2 different conversations) = “I’ve been doing oil pulling!” Boom. Done. Convinced me to try since I love whitening my teeth but those damn strips huuuurt my teeth and gums, ouch. Could this be a healthier, more comfortable alternative??

In a nutshell, I swished some coconut oil around my mouth this morning – what I’m hoping to get out of it – whiter teeth and fresher breath…oh and, I have 2 crowns that always bother me…hoping it helps clean around those babies.

new jar of Coconut Oil. Ready to be swished

My initial reaction when I put it in my mouth…a big glob of room temp coconut oil – “oh gross…gross…so thick.” But then I started swishing it around and realized it tastes faintly like coconut and nothing else- shocking, I know. I love the taste of coconut, that helps. The texture is thick but as you swish it around it starts to thin out. I tried to do it for the recommended 15-20 mins…they say it’s good to do it in the shower – 2 birds, 1 stone! But I did it while watching a movie…and I only lasted about 10 mins. Which I was fine with for my first time. My jaw actually got tired. Clearly, I need to relax my swishing a bit.

I brushed my teeth after, as recommended to remove any lingering bacteria. My mouth feels clean. No after-taste or oily feeling on my teeth.

I’ll check back in a week or so to let you know what I think. And let you know if there are any noticeable differences.

Have you tried oil pulling??

Girls weekend mini makeovers! Check out the “recipe” here!

While up in Jackson, NH for a girls weekend we spent Saturday afternoon on the couch snacking and chatting. Does it get better than that? Quality time with your girlfriends is a treat that is hard to compete with. No big party or lavish dinner could ever compare to just hanging out uninterrupted with some of your closest friends.

In addition to a lot of catching up there were also mini makeovers – which was super fun for yours truly!  We used the same set of skincare and makeup products for all the ladies (4 ladies in total!). With a couples tweaks, the colors were adjusted for the different complexions. Below is a list and description of what we did. AND some before & after pics

“Everyday makeup” recipe:

Started with a clean face, of course!

1. Moisturizer. A good daytime moisturizer. I used Bluemercury’s m-61 hydraboost moisturizer. It’s just the right texture – not too heavy/not too light. Paraben free. And serves as a silicone-free makeup base, score! I typically use 2 pumps but depending on the gal, I used more or less judging on their existing hydration level (in other words, if I found dry patches, we used some extra). Lots of gentle patting to blend it in all over the face and neck

2. Eye cream. I used Bluemercury’s m-61 hydraboost eye cream on all the ladies. Usually 1 pump is enough for both eyes. Dryness under the eyes is not a good canvas and it’s always good to use a designated ‘eye cream’ for that sensitive area. I love the m-61 brand because it’s hydrating without being greasy, paraben free, and the handy pump is travel friendly / hygienic

3. Foundation. Now that our canvas was prepped – time for the foundation. Depending on the lady, some hadn’t worn foundation before and some swear by it. This foundation was definitely not a match for everyone’s skin tone which was risky – but I used moisturizer to dilute it – and because we were applying bronzer and blush at the end, I could take some liberties with a slightly paler foundation. I like this new foundation by YSL – it’s their new FusionInk foundation that’s been getting a lot of good reviews. It does have good lasting power (24 hrs – is the claim. I think that’s a bit of a stretch!) – but it gives great coverage – they call it “soft matte” – without being heavy or cakey. It feels super light on the skin. I used a couple drips just to even off any discoloration and start with an “even canvas”

4. Spot treatmeant with Eye Brightener & Concealer. Since I’ve had dark circles since birth, I’m almost certain I’ve tried everything to mask them. I have many favorites in this dept. But my latest love is the Eye Brightener wand by Bobbi Brown. It has a flesh tone to it so blends really well and can double as an eyeshadow primer. This looked nice on all the girls. Next, we did a little spot treatment with NARS radiant creamy concealer in Vanilla. Side note, I forgot my all time favorite concealer Clea de Peau Beaute concealer which is superb for the under eye area. But this one by Nars is great, does the trick (and much more afforable). Again, was able to get away with a lighter shade because I made up for it with added bronzer. Only a couple of light dots needed under the eyes and on any blemishes – lightly pat with finger tips to blend

5. Eyeshadow. This was the first time I tried this eyeshadow palette and I loved it. Microsmooth eyeshadow palette by Sephora. A great combo of colors – I combined the lighter shades for all over the lid. I used the dark shades towards the outer corner to help open the eye. Also, a nice sweep of the lighter colors on the brow bone. I used this lovely brush by Bobbi Brown called the “eye sweep” brush to apply

6. Eyeliner. I only had 1 on hand but this baby did the trick. Bobbi Brown’s long wear eye pencil in Smoke. Because it’s a pencil I was able to vary how dark it went on. In other words, I pressed a bit harder if I was going for a darker line (I did this for Ashley who was a more olive complexion and darker hair). I lined the upper lid and lighter on the bottom – used more of a light dotting motion under the lash line. I always brush my finger tip ever so lightly over the bottom line so it doesn’t look so dramatic…blending it helps make it more natural vs. a stark line

7. Mascara. I brought out 2 different  – I was disappointed to find that my Benefit’s “they’re real” mascara was chunking out a bit (might be because my sample is almost out) so I swapped to a tried & true Diorshow Iconic waterproof mascara. I put multiple coats on each girl. I’m big into mascara…a few coats per eye, it makes a big difference. Once applied, I typically dab lashes with a tissue to get off the excess

8. Brow pencil. If anyone needed some brow fixing, I used this pencil liner by Chanel called the sculpting eyebrow pencil in blond clair which has a natural look. In other words, no harsh lines that scream ‘hey, I drew this on.’ I used it to buff in any bald or scarce brow areas. I’ve been hesitant with this step on myself in the past but have found if I do it right and use this pencil, it has a natural look and helps fill in my thin brows

9. Bronzer. I used this awesome, soft Bobbi Brown bronzer brush and Bobbi Brown bronzing powder in golden light. Thankfully, it was a good neutral color – not too dark or red and mixed well with each complexion

10. Blush. I love this one by Nars in the color Orgasm (thank you, Jilly Bean for making the introduction). Applied with a Bobbi Brown blush brush

11. Set it. We used Make Up Forever HD Finishing Powder to set everyone’s makeup using the sheer powder brush by Bobbi Brown. I’ve typically avoided this type of powder out of fear that it’ll be too heavy. But I love the lightness of this powder and have adopted into my routine to beat the excessive greasy glow I get on my forehead! I carry it in my purse because it tends to ramp up at the end of a work day

12. Lastly, lipgloss. I used a combination of this gloss by Sara Happ called The Lip Slip – The One Luxe color shine lip gloss in color ‘The Nude.’ Literally, the perfect nude gloss. On top of this, I put Nars lipgloss in Sweet Revenge. Nice POP of pink color. Looked good on everyone! This is a great combo for glossy lips with a pop of color without getting too dramatic
