Slow down…don’t rush…2013

Some people don’t believe in the whole New Years Resolution ‘thing.’ And sure, people can resolve to change or try something new any time. But this year, I have a different perspective on resolution time. Because, what better time to make a change or try something new but at the start of the new year. Just writing 2013 feels different…wow, another year! How cool!

Outside of trying some new beauty tricks and treatments (which I find super fun) – I want to try my best to stop rushing around.

Most of us have a full plate – between work, family, friends, working out etc. there is a lot we have to balance, women in particular! I constantly find myself rushing from one thing to the next and from one thought to the next. Sometimes working myself into all out panic or an anxious state.

For me and most people, changing how I do things or think about things is clearly not an overnight change. And in the spirit of not rushing, I’m working to make some mini changes that I am hoping will help me think and move differently over time.

So, this AM I re-introduced myself to yoga. After more than a year without it – I realized, my work outs are typically focused on cardio and strength training (both are great!) but often times the pace of these work outs feeds into my perpetual feeling of rushing and constant ‘going.’ Yoga, by nature, asks you to slow down and be in the moment. And despite the pace feeling slow – the movements challenge me in a more calming way (it helps to be constantly focusing or being reminded by the instructor to focus on your breathing).

Today, I walked into the studio – which was filled to the brim with regulars and of course, people like me regarded as ‘resolutioners.’ Whatever. I made it and I was ready to try it out again. The class was long – 75 minutes! Holy crap. The pace varied…I had a few moments of ‘oh my gosh, I forgot how hard this is!’ and instead of pushing myself to the point of pain or strain, I would go back into child pose and let myself rest. I probably looked at the clock 8x…finally, at the 50 minute mark I told myself ‘you’re not going anywhere, don’t rush out the door, don’t quit.’ And I stuck it out – fully enjoying the last 5 minutes of shavasana. Ahh CONCIOUS STILLNESS – and I mean true stillness because I’m not staring at some type of screen thinking about words or numbers or posts! I tried to stay in the moment and keep my mind from rushing through thoughts…that was pretty hard. But I did my best not to critique myself too much. I left the class feeling rejuvenated

Getting back into yoga for me is a way to focus on one of my ‘resolutions’ which is to slow down a little. To focus on the moment better. I can’t say it’ll change anything drastically – but I do know, my body and spirit felt better walking out of that class. I walked to my car and drove home more calmly than usual. I actually did the dishes and sat on the couch – and felt slower than usual…and it felt good!

Do you have a resolution? Big or small, what are you doing to achieve it?

Work out gear to kick off the new year!

As some of us look to revamp our work-out routine or at least get back at it after some indulging and lazy days, I thought I’d share a few work-out favorites.

(Links through-out the post, just click the underlined/hyperlinked product names)

  • Victorias Secret Supermodel Cami Sport Bra – currently on clearance for $19.99 @ Victoriassecret.com
Victorias Secret Supermodel Cami Sports Bra

Victorias Secret Supermodel Cami Sports Bra

    • Designed for lower impact sports (i.e. yoga or barre) I love this bra because it’s comfortable and for me, it has the right amount of support. The straps are adjustable so I tend to tighten when I’m ready to work out or need more support. The bra has removable padding so you don’t have to worry when it gets cold out, if you know what I mean. I have a couple of these bras and sometimes wear it to run errands or just hanging out because it has a flattering fit without underwire which can be uncomfortable
  • Lululemon Run Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve – $68 @ Lululemon

    Lululemon Run Swiftly Long Sleeve

    Lululemon Run Swiftly Long Sleeve

  • When the weather gets chilly, motivating yourself to ‘get out there’ and work out can be harder. I love this Lulu long sleeve top because it provides a warmer layer that I wear over my tank top. It is breathable and sometimes I wear it throughout my work out without overheating. I like that there is no zipper or hood to get in my way
  • Reebok Women’s No Show Socks 6-pck  – $18 Marshalls/TJ Maxx – also found online
    Reebok No Show socks

    Reebok No Show socks

    • The Reebok No Show socks are comfortable with a bit of padding and just the right height so I don’t have to worry about ankle grabbing. I got a black pack the last time so that I can tell them apart from my 100s of white socks!
  • Lululemon Wunder Under Crops – $78 @ Lululemon
    Lululemon Wunder Under Crops

    Lululemon Wunder Under Crops

    • These are my go-to year-round. I tend to get too hot in the Lulu floor length pants. These crops hit my leg at the right point – mid/lowcalf. Sometimes crops that fall at the knee can be distracting or uncomfortable during your work out because they’ll bunch behind the knee. These crops fit great, no wedgies, never sheer. They wash well and will last you a long time – which is good because they’re a bit pricey
  • IAMMAI Women’s Racer Tank – $45 @ Iammaiapparel.com
IAMMAI Womens Racer Tank "Work Harder Right Here. Right Now."

IAMMAI Womens Racer Tank “Work Harder Right Here. Right Now.”

    • This tank is definitely a splurge – but I love the inspirational/motivational messages on IAMMAI gear. When you look at it dead-on, it looks backwards – but in front of the mirror (i.e. while you’re working out and working hard) you can see the message the right way. The cotton is super soft and the cut is very flattering – and although working out shouldn’t be a fashion show – I’m definitely more motivated when I feel comfortable and confident in my work out gear
  • The Twistband Headband – $4 @ thetwistband.com
The Twistband Headband in color Bubblegum

The Twistband Headband in color Bubblegum

    • An absolute must when I work out is a good headband that doesn’t slip off. It keeps the loose hairs away from my face that can tickle and be distracting. The traditional Twistband headband is one of my favorites. It’s simple and stretchy – doesn’t loose stretch, isn’t too tight and stays in place. It comes in a bunch of different colors and patterns – super cute!

2013 Beauty Resolution – The Oil Cleansing Method & Pristine Beauty moisturizer

It’s a new year! Time to try something new…for me, I realized my 2013 Beauty Resolution the other night while standing in my bathroom holding an empty jar of the overpriced face moisturizer I bought before my wedding. I told myself – nope, you are not buying a new jar of this. Instead – I will try something different…that’s more affordable and more natural.

I am working 2 new treatments into my daily routine. I’d like to thank my sister, Katy St. Marie for introducing me to both – she has become a go-to resource for healthier lifestyle products.

Face Wash:

  • The Oil Cleansing Method:
    • This is actually a homemade ‘wash’ – but it kind of flips what we’re used to in terms of face wash on its head. No more suds or foam…or even cream wash…the reality is a lot of the face and body wash products we use strip the oil from our skin –  “leaving our largest organ trying to repair itself by replacing the oil stripped away. This leaves us in a cycle of being tight and dry followed by the inevitable oil slick. Each time we strip the oil away, our skin over-compensates for the lack of moisture by creating more oil. On top of the drying effects, these products are highly-scented. Fragrance is one of the top skin irritants and strangely enough, even the so-called “unscented” products usually contain fragrance. See for yourself and check the labels.” (courtesy of http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com)
    • So I am using – an oil cleansing mixture of 1 part ORGANIC OLIVE OIL to 1 part CASTOR OIL. You can change this up depending on your skin type i.e. more olive oil for dry skin / more castor oil for oily skin. Both can be purchased for less than $10 at a local health food store. Katy originally found the recipe on Pinterest – more details found here – excellent real-life review of oil cleansing method. For a container, Katy recycled an old moisturizer pump bottle and put the mixture in there:
My oil cleansing container, thanks Katy!

My oil cleansing container, thanks Katy!

    • What you need to do the oil cleansing method:
        • Oil mixture
        • Clean wash cloth
        • Warm water
    • How to do it: put a few pumps in my (clean) palm, rub it around to warm it up, then massage all over my face and neck, you can totally get it around the eye area, it does not irritate and will help remove eye make-up. Once massaged in (say a minute or 2), wet your wash cloth with warm water and wring out, take it and drape it over your face so that the steam helps open the pores for deeper cleansing. After this, I typically swipe the cloth around and remove the excess oil – but don’t rub too hard!
    • This cleanser is free of parabens and chemical additives that are too often found in our beauty products. The US actually has some of the most lax beauty/cosmetic product and ingredient regulations – some ingredients in our beauty and household products are banned in other countries. With that said, I cannot claim to completely  avoid these things, but I am trying, over time, to minimize my exposure to such things that have been linked to illness, including some cancers
    • For now I am doing the oil cleansing method 1x a day at night. The above link(s) are great resources for The Oil Cleansing method, which much more information. They recommend you don’t do it too frequently – so for now, I’m sticking with 1x a day and I’ll continue to exfoliate every other day (I use the Clarisonic with a bit of this)

Pristine Beauty Hooray for Brallywood Butta

Pristine Beauty Hooray for Brallywood Butta

    • What drew me in the most about this brand is that it was founded by a breast cancer survivor who initially created her own beauty-care products (after much research) because she had trouble finding natural, chemical-free products in stores. It started out as a way to make personal care products for herself and rolled into a product line free of parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, propylene glycol – cruelty free and vegan…made for anyone, including those going through or recovering from cancer treatment. If you’re interested, read more here
    • Pristine offers a bunch of other products including a hair serum and deoderant which I am also going to try & review
    • I use Brallywood Butta morning and night following my cleansing. I love the pump because I don’t have to worry about contaminating the cream with my fingers. The cap keeps it secure and clean. It is also a great amount of product for the cost – my sister had her first bottle for almost a year – using around 4 pumps 2x a day
    • The cream is very moisturizing but not greasy. It has a mild citrusy smell from the natural tangerine and lemon oil. According to the site: “It soothes, calms and heals rosacea and eczema. This crème will even out the skin tone and make it brighter and more luminous, while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You will see the consistency is like a makeup primer. It glides on, minimizing pore size and will not settle into fine lines.”
    • I will be reporting back in a couple weeks about it’s longer term effects. I’ve only been using it for a few days at this point. So far my skin feels super soft and I love being able to smooth this all over my face and neck and not panic that I’m using too much product (which I used to do when it cost me approx. $150 per oz!)

Do you have any beauty resolutions? Have you or would you try the oil cleansing method? How do you work more natural products into your beauty routine?

Don’t forget the stocking stuffers! 10 unisex stocking stuffer ideas

ImageStocking stuffers are totally fine to leave until the last minute – at least I think so! Below is a list of 10 unisex stocking stuffers. Each quite different from the other! The below is an alternative to the typical candy canes and marshmallow Santas (which I love!)

All under $20

  1. Mario Badescu Dry Lotion – this stuff is magic. And although it goes on pink, it is meant to be worn at night…and will zap a pimple in no time. Especially those painful ones that seem to last weeks. Not to name-names, but my husband swears by this and I usually put a bottle in his stocking. Click the above link for more information. $17 / available @ Nordstrom

  3. Lip Balm Stick – this one by Avalon Organics is my favorite (approx. $3). It has a rosemary + vanilla scent which is guy-friendly. It conditions the lips really well without adding too much shine. It uses beeswax and organic oils to moisturize, lovely! Avalon Organics available at some specialty health foods stores and super markets (i.e. Stop & Shop) – I’d double check Avalon’s site first to confirm

  4. Weekly/Monthly Planner – I love this one by Blue Sky – available at Target. It is travel friendly. I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly double booking myself – and having a planner helps me track everything from social engagements to dentist appointments. This one is less than $10 – who couldn’t use a good planner?

    Image

A weekly planner can be a lifesaver – available in many colors. This one is durable!

  5. iTunes card – this might not seem that creative, but with all the apps you can download now and the fact that you can buy Apple products through the iTunes store as well, there is a lot someone can do with an iTunes card. And you can pick one up almost anywhere. You don’t have to worry about a big increment because even $10 will buy someone a bunch of songs or a couple movie rentals. Available in a variety of increments @ CVS, Best Buy etc.
  6. Vitamin C Gummies – these have been a lifesaver for me this winter. I try to take them everyday and since they’re tasty and in gummy form, it makes it much easier to remember. Available at supermarkets, Target, Trader Joes etc.

    Image

Yummi bears – available at Target

  7. Dark Chocolate – I consider this a healthy gift…I’m sure most of us have read about the benefits of DARK chocolate. Trader Joes has a great sampler right now – which includes a few different bars. The link above is to Godiva – a dark chocolate peppermint crunch bar, yum! Try for at least 70% cacao. This Godiva is 50%, I still think that’s good – hey, it’s the Holidays!
  8. Poo-Pourri – yup, you read that right. This little bottle can come in handy especially when you are visiting someone. Or, it’s a nice thing to leave out in your bathroom if you have guests. And hey, at the very least, it’ll make someone laugh! Available at specialty stores/boutiques, check the site for a location near you. Approx. $10

    Poo-Pourri – how cute, right??

  9. Mini tweezers – a unibrow doesn’t look good on anyone. I think everyone should have a good pair of tweezers handy. I love this mini pair by Tweezerman – it comes in a little tube case for easy/clean storing. $15 / available @ Sephora

Tweezerman mini – in a manly blue!

  10. Comfortable pen(s) – might sound boring, but most people appreciate a good pen! One that writes smoothly! And this can be a good reminder to send thank-you notes for all the gifts you may receive. I love these Pilot G2 rollers, super easy to write with! 3 pack approx. $5 @ Target

Tried & True: super cheap DRY SHAMPOO!

While visiting NYC this weekend, I realized this tried & true post is a long time coming. I’ll set the stage…I washed, blow dried, and curled my hair on Wednesday morning…it was kind of a stretch to expect it to hold up until Friday night – but it did. It was almost unheard of to allow it to go another day – but alas, I had no choice. We rolled out of bed Saturday AM, went shopping, and suddenly it was 4pm and we had to cab it back to where we were staying, change, freshen up, and then make it to dinner across town by 6pm. I had no choice but to employ the use of DRY SHAMPOO for the 3rd day in a row. I had my doubts…but again, this amazing product helped me pull through sans greasy hair. And I danced the night away with a nice do’ all-Saturday-night-long.

And this is when I realized I must share this product with EVERYONE (who cares).

I’ve tried quite a few brands – some that are $20 a bottle…after much testing, the absolute BEST is by SAUVE. Believe it or not, whether it’s the texture or how it sprays on your hair, this brand works the best. I like that Sauve doesn’t flatten my hair/weigh it down. And it’s <$3 a bottle at most stores (I’ve seen it at Target, CVS, Walgreens, Wal-Mart etc.)!!! For more info on Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Spray  <—click on the link

Sauve Dry Shampoo - the bomb

Sauve Dry Shampoo – the bomb

Direction on how to apply dry shampoo – well, at least how I do it:

When you can use:

  • You’re heading out after work and your hair is flat/potentially greasy from the day – dry shampoo moment
  • You just woke up and don’t have time to wash/dry your hair before work – dry shampoo moment
  • It’s Sunday, you’re too tired to shower, the mall closes at 6pm and you want to go shopping but not look greasy – dry shampoo moment
  • You want to create an up-do and just-washed hair is too soft for your hair to stay up – well, leave it for a day and just use the dry shampoo to freshen your locks before styling

How to apply:

  • You really don’t need to brush your hair first, but you can – especially if it’s knotted. I usually don’t brush too hard because I don’t want to spread any oils throughout my hair
  • Get your bottle of spray shampoo – and I hold a couple inches away from my head and spray along the hair line (i.e. around forehead, side-burn area, and usually all around to the back of my neck). I also spray on the very top of my head / along the part line
  • Now, tousle your hair – mix it in…sometimes I use a tissue if I feel like I need to pick up any dry shampoo residue
  • brush lightly, style, and GOOOOO!

Do you use dry shampoo? what kind? hate it or love it?
